David’s own, “that we could go back to my place. I’ll make
you dinner, and later we could—”
“I told you, old man, that you could suck me off. That’s
it. Nothing more. Now give me my fifty.”
“Old!” David was shouting. “If this is only thirty years
into my future, I’m in my midfifties, you little snot!”
“He can’t hear you.” Chance said.
“Can he feel it if I spit on him?”
Chance placed a hand on David’s shoulder. Suddenly
the stall disappeared. As the toilet beneath him vanished,
David found himself falling. Luckily, he only had a little
distance to fall before his feet hit pavement. He looked
around. They were back on the street outside the
coffeehouse. The passersby didn’t seem to have noticed that
two men had appeared out of nowhere.
“How do you do that?” David asked, astonished.
“Which?” Chance asked. “How do I transport you to a
possible future for yourself or how do I slip you back into the
present without anyone noticing? The former takes only a
touch from me. The latter is a little trickier. I’ve got to time
things just right and pick a moment when no one is
watching the spot where we’re going to appear. Even more
important, I’ve got to pick a moment when no one is
standing in that spot, otherwise— splat—things get very
messy.”
David took a few deep breaths. “I think I need to sit
down.” Seeing no bench handy, he leaned against the wall
instead. A woman toting a bag of groceries walked past and
eyed the pair warily. She gazed at David with concern mixed
with suspicion, as if she were pondering whether to get
involved with the young man who obviously didn’t look well.
She apparently decided it wasn’t any of her business and
picked up her pace a little. David watched her retreating
back. “So you’re saying I could end up overweight and bald
and reduced to sucking off some grotty little hustler in a
